Notes
- The 1861 has Charles W Datlen living with his wife, Jane CharlotteDatlen at Oxenden Street, Dover [RG9-549-44-5]. He is aged 25 yearsand occupation is given as mariner. But another 1861 entry has aCharles Datlin aboard the vessel "John Penn" also aged 25 years, married, and born in Dover [RG9-4447-32-]. I believe that these areboth the same man. I have discounted the possibility that the latterentry could be a different name as it is clearly written. If they aretwo entirely different people then there must be another branch of theDatlen family as yet undiscovered as there are no other CharlesDatlen's of this age at this time. The enumerator may have assumedthat Charles was at home when he was not.
On the 13th December 1865 Charles was acting Mate on board the MailPacket Steamer the "Samphire" sailing from Dover to Calais when therewas a collision with another vessel the American bark "Fanny Buck". 3people died two women and a man. The incident was reported in theTimes Newspaper.
