Notes

  • eMail from Jill Minchin dated 12 June 2009:

When my father left school, he was apprenticed to a whitesmith(tinsmith);  after his apprenticeship finished he was not re-employed,the master taking on new apprentices (cheaper than a journeyman).  Hebecame a merchant seaman (ship's steward) and spent most of hisworking life so.  During the war he remained in the Merchant Navy, andbetween ships he served in the London Auxiliary Fire Service. I havemany papers of his from that time. Sometime after the war he joinedthe Post Office Cable Ships as a steward, and my first memories of hisworking life are of him being 2nd Steward (Captain's steward) on HMTSAlert, based at Woolwich.  Towards the end of his service hetransferred to HMTS Ariel, based at Dover, and he and my mother movedback to Dover in about 1964.  After retiring from sea, he worked forDover Harbour Board until his final retirement.
