Originated June 1999

In 1998 I was researching the GENUK internet pages for the county of Kent and came across the following link:-

Shelagh Mason S.A.Mason@canterbury.ac.uk has provided information about the names Holmes(249k), and Stead(75k) appearing in Kent records:
http://users.ox.ac.uk/~malcolm/genuki/big/eng/KEN/Holmes.txt

Following this link returned a page of parish entries, one of which related to the marriage of Susana Datlen to Peter Holmes in St. Mary, Sandwich, 1655:-

In June 1999 I booked into Canterbury Cathedral Archives to conduct research into the Datlen history. One of my priorities was to check the above entry in the parish registers. I located the correct microfilm relating to marriages in St. Mary's Church, Sandwich, 1655 (reference number U3/11/1/1) and I obtained a photo copy of the entry:-

Susana Datlen Marriage

This record is difficult to read but the copy I obtained included 12 other records written by the same person. By studying these other records I was able to make a complete interpretation:-

An agreement of marriage betweene Peter Holmes and Susana (?)at(?)en both of St Maries parish was published on three general Lords days that is to say the 6, 13, 20 of May 1655.
And the said Peter & Susana his wife were married by me Thomas Browne Justice of the peace for and within the libertie of the towne and port of Sandwich the 2nd June 1655.
Susana Datlen Detail

Susana's surname reads (?)at(?)en, the first and fourth letters being the least legible, as shown in the blown up image above left. The nearest match I can see for the fourth letter is a t but it could be a poorly written l or h. The first letter does not resemble an upper or lower case D found elsewhere on the page, see examples above middle.. It could, however be a capital L, as the examples above right illustrate. The arc shaped line below the initial letter of the surname is part of that letter and does not belong to the word beneath it. I therefore suspect the surname reads Latten or Lathen.

Both the names Latten and Lathen appear in genealogical registers. The Mormon International Genealogical Index has an entry showing the marriage between Susanne Latten and Peter Volmer at St Mary’s Church, Sandwich, Kent on 2nd June 1655 which is almost certainly the same couple[1].
