Emma Datlen[1]
Born 1851?[2]  Died 1920 - 1921

Emma went to Paris in early youth, said to be the result of a broken romance.

Became Governess-tutor to the Grand Duke Paul's children of Russia, and lived for many years on the Ducal Estates.

After the 1917 revolution[3] nothing was heard of her until Dover police contacted her brother Robert Elgar Datlen living at Limekiln St, Dover.

It appeared the old lady had wandered around Europe until she eventually landed at Newcastle by a steamer.

Very vacant, all she could remember was Datlen, Dover, but at times could remember vividly and give lucid details of her experience and poverty during the Revolution.

Years before when she came on holiday to Dover she was remembered for the flowing black silk gowns shw wore, and would talk of the days it would take her to go back overland on the Trans Siberian Railway.

When she arrived in Dover she stayed at Limekiln St. for a time, but was taken to the Victorian Hospital, Dover and then to St. Augustine's hospital, Chatham.

She had a solid silver travlelling clock when she arrived, this was given to her sister, Jessie,[4] and then passed on to her grandson.

Frederick Datlen, born 1871, son of Robert Elgar had prior to 1914 often cared for some of the Russian royal family on board ship when he was chief steward.

Robert Terry his son, while on service with the Cross Channel Fleet about 1930 was introduced to Serge Oblolensky as the son of Frederick.

R.T.D.[5] asked the Prince if he could find out any details of his Great Aunt and her service in Russia.

Some months later the Prince crossed the Channel again and said he could only find out from his friends that the Estate of the Grand Duke was over-run by the Revolutionaries and all the staff had left
